Bienvenidos a otra edición de Girlsplaining, donde yo -una niña- les explica cosas. No pretendo parecer una experta en estos temas, de hecho no lo soy, pero aprendo lo suficientemente rápido para poder explicar lo básico y que, con cada artículo, puedan aumentar sus chances de algún día ganar ¿Quién quiere ser millonario?

Gracias a Jaime Sandoval, asesor de Bitcoin, criptomonedas y blockchain, por ayudarme a entender este universo.

Blockchain, criptomonedas y NFTs parecen ser las palabras favoritas de Internet. No hay un día que entre a Twitter sin que me encuentre con alguna de ellas, y debo aclarar que he curado minuciosamente mi timeline para que esté lleno de memes, tweets de comediantes y una que otra foto de algún Avenger sin camisa.

Hoy les voy a explicar qué significa cada uno de esos conceptos en la forma como yo lo logré entender.

¿Qué es la tecnología Blockchain?

“Es un registro único, consensuado y distribuido en varios nodos de una red.” Explica el blog WeLiveSecurity

El blog Yeeply, lo explica de esta forma, “es una tecnología basada en una cadena de bloques con una base de datos pública y distribuida en la que se registran de forma segura las transacciones que se van realizando en la red.”

Yo, tu girlsplainer de confianza, te lo explica en palabras mucho más entendibles.

Como he mencionado en correos anteriores, el Internet está lleno de información - generada y almacenada por nosotros -, y al ser un sistema informático, eso lo hace hackeable. Ante este problema, nace la tecnología de Blockchain.

Lo que ocurre generalmente es que las bases de datos de esa y otro tipo de información se almacenan en un solo servidor. Por ejemplo, tu historia clínica la tiene solo tu médico o la clínica que visitas. Al estar solo en ese lugar, si alguien hackea y cambia los archivos, entonces tui información médica se modificaría para siempre.

Lo que hace la Blockchain (cadena de bloques) es contener información en muchos servidores. Es una base de datos compartida, donde cada bloque contiene información (además de un archivo con la base de datos que tienen todos los ordenadores interconectados). Cada bloque tiene: 1) la información (por ejemplo, datos de una transacción, emisor, receptor, cantidad, fecha), 2) el Hash - el número de identificación de cada bloque, es único e irrepetible, 3) el Hash del bloque anterior que los permite conectarse entre sí (creando una cadena).

¿Qué hace a este sistema ser inhackeable?

El Hash, además de ser un número único de identificación que permite conectar los bloques entre sí, también se modifica con la información que está dentro del bloque. Entonces si uno contiene una base de datos con información igual a la de los otros bloques y un Hash #CC68263, al cambiar la información que tiene dentro por otra base de datos distinta, el Hash también cambiará y ya no va a encajar en la cadena.

Al no encajar en la cadena, y al haber tantos bloques interconectados entre sí que velan por la seguridad de la cadena, el bloque con el nuevo número de identificación es invalidado. Lo que hace que este sistema sea impenetrable.

Mientras hay más información que necesita almacenamiento, se necesita crear más espacio. Los mineros se encargan de crear ese nuevo bloque.

¿Cómo se crea un bloque?

Para crear un bloque se tiene que resolver una ecuación matemática que requiere de procesadores para lograrlo. Los mineros compran y habilitan este tipo de computadores para la resolución de ese problema y crear los bloques.

Los mineros son recompensados por ese trabajo. El último artículo que encontré dice que estos mineros cobran 6,25 BTC por bloque creado.

¿Qué cosas usan Blockchain?

Las bases de este sistema no son nada nuevas, se crearon en 1991, pero no fue usado hasta el año 2009 cuando Satoshi Nakamoto (un pseudónimo), el nombre real de esta persona o grupo de personas sigue sin salir a la luz, usó el sistema para crear la criptomoneda que todos conocemos como Bitcoin.

Pero las criptomonedas no son las únicas que usan este sistema.

La Blockchain se usa para firmar contratos, llevar a cabo elecciones, hacer transferencias bancarias, guardar historias médicas, y muchas cosas más.

Hablemos de criptomonedas.

Ya que entendemos qué es Blockchain. La razón por la que se ha vuelto tan relevante es porque permite la autorregulación de transacciones sin necesidad de terceros, bancos, gobiernos, etc.

La Blockchain es como un gran libro de contabilidad, pero sin control gubernamental, y además permite replicar el anonimato del efectivo en el mundo online.

Según el Banco Santander, “Una criptomoneda es un activo digital que emplea un cifrado criptográfico para garantizar su titularidad y asegurar la integridad de las transacciones, y controlar la creación de unidades adicionales, es decir, evitar que alguien pueda hacer copias como haríamos, por ejemplo, con una foto. Estas monedas no existen de forma física: se almacenan en una cartera digital.”

Es decir, una criptomoneda es una moneda digital que no existe en la vida real como algo tangible, sino como unos y ceros en una computadora.

Cada criptomoneda tiene su propia Blockchain con funcionamiento diferente.

Las criptomonedas, al igual que el dinero común, funcionan para pagar servicios, gustos, etc. La limitante es que no todos los comercios, servicios o personas aceptan este tipo de pagos.

Las criptomonedas, aunque cada una tiene su propio modelo económico, se regulan por el mercado. Oferta y demanda.

Son un mini oasis de libre mercado en el mundo del internet. Hay cientos de criptomonedas, pero hoy solo les voy a explicar el Bitcoin.

Bitcoin - ¿Qué es? Y ¿Por qué la gente habla tanto de esto?

Es como la Britney de las criptomonedas, la primera en raparse el pelo por una crisis existencial. (En este newsletter apoyamos la liberación de la princesa del pop #freeBritney).

Esta fue la primera criptomoneda, y al día que estoy escribiendo este correo, un Bitcoin vale USD 50,098. Hace unos días llegó a los sesenta mil dólares.

Los Bitcoins tienen como modelo de negocio simular el comportamiento del oro. Entonces, “cada una de estas monedas tiene su propio comportamiento económico. Por ejemplo, el Bitcoin tiene una emisión límite. Solo se pueden crear 21 millones de Bitcoins y no se pueden crear más después de que se minen todos,” me explicó el asesor de criptomonedas, blockchain y Bitcoin, Jaime Sandoval.

Se han creado 18 millones de Bitcoins, lo que significa que solo quedan tres millones por sacar al mercado. Sin embargo, como esta moneda se asemeja al oro, se vuelve más complicada de “minar” a medida que se va volviendo escasa. Entonces, se necesita mayor tecnología y mejores mineros que resuelvan las, aún más complejas, ecuaciones matemáticas.

La idea de mantenerla exclusiva tiende a sugerir que cada vez será más costosa. Es como la ropa Gucci, hay cosas que uno jamás usaría, pero las quieres solo porque pocos tienen acceso a ellas.

Una de las consecuencias ocultas de crear este tipo de criptomonedas es que se requiere mucha electricidad para hacerlo y eso genera una impresión de carbono altísima, lo que conlleva a mayor contaminación. No tengo espacio para extenderme mucho así que les dejo un artículo que lo explica.

Otras criptomonedas interesantes de estudiar son Ethereum, Dogecoin (la moneda que nació de un meme), Tether, Polkadot y Ripple.

Ya les hablé de Blockchain y criptos. Ahora les puedo hablar de NFTs.

“Criptos”, ¿vieron cómo lancé ese slang como toda una experta? Spoiler alert: No lo soy.

El NFT es un concepto relativamente nuevo que significa, por sus siglas en inglés, “Token no fungible” (non-fungible token).

Los tokens son activos digitales, parecidos a las criptomonedas, pero no iguales, porque generalmente su uso se limita a una sola red Blockchain donde se pueden comprar y vender.

Para explicarlo en español, un token es como un crédito de un juego de celular. Las monedas de Candy Crush solo sirven ahí, no puedes usarlas para comprar armas en Call of Duty. Puedes comprar más monedas en cada una de las aplicaciones, y seguramente puedes venderlas en algún lugar de Reddit.

Cuando se dice que los tokens no son fungibles quiere decir que son únicos, y aunque se puedan copiar no tendrán el número de identificación que tiene el original.

Entonces, “un NFT es un archivo digital único que se puede comprar y vender en las redes blockchain”, explica TreceBits.

¿Qué hace único a un NFT?

Como les expliqué al inicio de este mail, las Blockchains permiten conocer al 100% la información que hay dentro de ellas. Por lo que el archivo NFT se almacena en uno de estos bloques y se registra con un código único que señala quién es el propietario. Las copias no tendrán ese código.

¿Qué puede ser un NFT?

Una foto, un video, una canción, un escrito, un chiste, un tweet, este correo, cualquier archivo digital que se entrega o vende de forma única.

Aunque estos archivos se puedan copiar, las copias jamás tendrán el código de autenticidad que tiene el NFT.

Se dice que el mercado de los NFTs se ve como una galería de arte online, donde los artistas y creadores subastan su contenido original.

Sí, puedes tener una copia de “Demasiadas Mujeres” de C. Tangana gratis en tu celular, pero si eso se convierte en un NFT podrías tener la canción original y no una de las infinitas copias.

Si pensamos un segundo, la forma en la que hoy consumimos arte es muy similar a la forma en cómo lo hacíamos cuando existía BlockBuster, a diferencia de que ahora no tenemos que ir a un lugar a rentar una película en físico, sino que lo rentas de forma digital.

Por ejemplo, al consumir música en Spotify y pagar una suscripción por acceder a ella, es una forma de rentar el contenido. El día que dejes de pagar, debes devolver todas esas canciones que tenías descargadas.

Porque ahora no somos dueños del contenido que consumimos, lo rentamos.

De cierta forma el “comprar una película original” de antes, es el “comprar un NFT” de ahora. Sí, siempre se ha podido acceder al contenido de una forma distinta, por piratería o rentada, pero el contenido original siempre ha tenido un valor diferente.

Eso es parte de lo que rescatan los NFT.

Un dato curioso, el creador de Twitter, Jack Dorsey, vendió su primer tweet como un NFT en $2.9M USD.

¿Qué significa esto para el arte?

Por mi parte, yo detesto la idea de que el artista es sinónimo de pobreza y que debe sacrificar lo material por entregarse al arte.

Yo creo que el arte, al igual que cualquier otro tipo de trabajo, tiene que garantizar un nivel de vida similar al de sus pares. Porque al final, un edificio puede ser tan esencial como una canción. Todos consumimos arte de una u otra forma.

Los NFTs abren una puerta enorme para que eso termine.

Es una oportunidad de vender y consumir arte hecho a la medida para cada tipo de plataforma.

Permite entender que un TikTok puede tener valor artístico así como lo tiene un meme, un Tweet o una pintura al óleo.

Al tener valor artístico, también tiene valor económico, y quién sabe si en un futuro los artistas podremos vivir de lo que nos gusta y no de nuestro trabajo corporativo que paga nuestros sueños.

Blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and NFTs seem to be the Internet's favorite words. There is not a day I'm on Twitter and don't read one of them. And I must say I have curated my timeline perfectly to be full of memes, comedians, and an occasional photo of a shirtless Avenger.

Today I'll explain what each of these concepts means in the way I managed to understand them.

What is Blockchain?

According to the Euromoney blog, "It's a system of recording information in a way that makes it difficult or impossible to change, hack, or cheat the system."

IBM explains it this way, "Blockchain is a shared, immutable ledger that facilitates the process of recording transactions and tracking assets in a business network."

Me, your trusted girlsplainer, explains it to you in much more understandable words.

As I have explained in previous emails, the Internet is full of information - generated and stored by us -, since it is hackable is also risky. Blockchain technology emerged to solve that problem.

What generally happens is that the databases of this and other types of information are stored on a single server. For example, your medical records are only kept by your doctor or the clinic you visit. If someone hacked and changed those files, your medical information would be changed forever since they're only stored there.

On the other hand, a blockchain is like a shared database, where each block has different information (in addition to a copy of the database file). Each block has 1) the information (for example, in a transaction, the block would store the info regarding the sender, receiver, amount, date), 2) the Hash - the identification number of each block, it is unique and unrepeatable, 3) the Hash of the previous block that allows them to connect to each other (building a chain).

What makes this system unhackable?

The Hash. In addition to it being a unique identification number that allows the blocks to be connected to each other, is also modified by the information inside each block.

If the block contains a database with the same information as the other blocks and a Hash #CC68263. If someone changes the data, the Hash will also change and no longer fit in the chain.

Since the blocks are interconnected, whenever a block doesn't fit into the chain anymore, it gets invalidated, making this system unhackable.

Every day more information enters these blocks, and more space is needed. The miners are the ones responsible for creating that space.

How do you create a block?

Miners create blocks by solving a mathematical equation that requires many processors to do so. The miners buy and enable these types of computers to solve the equation and make the blocks.

The last article I found says that these miners charge 6.25 BTC per block created.

What uses Blockchain?

The base for this system is really nothing new. It was created in 1991, but it was not used until 2009 when Satoshi Nakamoto (a pseudonym), the actual name of this person or group remains unknown, used the system to create the cryptocurrency we all know, Bitcoin.

The Blockchain is like a big accounting book but without any supervision. The Blockchain simulates the anonymity of cash in the online world.

According to Santander Bank,"A cryptocurrency is a digital asset that uses cryptographic encryption to guarantee its ownership and ensure the integrity of transactions, and control the creation of additional units, that is, prevent someone from making copies as we would, for example, with a photo. These coins do not exist in physical form: they are stored in a digital wallet."

A cryptocurrency is a digital currency that does not exist in real life as something tangible, if not only as ones and zeros on a computer.

Each cryptocurrency has its own Blockchain and operates differently from others. Cryptocurrencies, like common money, are used to pay for services, commodities, etc. The limitation is not all businesses, services, or people accept this type of payment.

Although each has its own economic model, cryptos are regulated by the market and the primary supply and demand law. It is a mini free-market oasis in the internet world.

There are hundreds of cryptocurrencies. I am only going to explain Bitcoin.

Bitcoin - What is it? And why do people talk so much about this?

Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency. In fact, it was the one that brought to life the existence of blockchains.

As part of their business model, Bitcoins simulate the behavior of gold.

The idea of keeping it exclusive tends to suggest it will get more and more expensive. It's like Gucci clothes, you probably wouldn't wear many of their clothes, but you desire to have them only because few have access to them.

One of the hidden consequences of creating this type of currency is the amount of electricity required. It's generating a very high carbon print, which is leading to more contamination. I do not have space to expand much on this, so here’s an article that explains it.

Other intriguing cryptocurrencies to study are Ethereum, Dogecoin (the coin born from a meme), Tether, Polkadot, and Ripple.

We've already talked about Blockchain and crypto. Now we can enter the NFT world.

"Crypto", I feel like such an expert using that lingo! Spoiler alert: I am not.

NFT is a relatively new concept that stands for "non-fungible token."

Tokens are digital assets, similar to cryptocurrencies. But tokens are usually limited to a single blockchain network where they can be bought and sold.

To explain it in English, a token is like a credit from a mobile game. Candy Crush coins only work there. You cannot use them to buy weapons in Call of Duty. However, you could buy credits on each app and probably sell your somewhere on Reddit.

These tokens are not fungible because they are unique, they can be copied or replicated, but the original will have an identification number identifying it.

"An NFT is a unique digital file that can be bought and sold on blockchain networks," explains TreceBits.

What makes an NFT unique?

As I explained at the beginning of this email, blockchains allow you to know 100% of the information within them. The NFT file is stored in one of these blocks and registered under the owner's name with a unique code indicating it is original, unique.

The ID code cannot be changed or copied.

What can be an NFT?

A photo, a video, a song, a piece of writing, a joke, a tweet, this email. Any digital file is delivered or sold uniquely.

The market for NFTs is said to be seen as a digital art gallery, where artists and creators can auction off their original content.

Yes, you can have a copy of "Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles for free on your cell phone, but if that becomes an NFT, you could have the original song and not one of the infinite copies.

Let's reflect for a second. The way we consume art today is very similar to how we did it when BlockBuster was a thing. Unlike now, we don't have to go to a place to rent a physical movie. We rent it in a digital form.

For example, consuming music on Spotify and paying a monthly subscription to access the music, we're renting the content. The day we stop paying, we must return all downloaded songs.

Because we don't own the content, we consume. We rent it.

In a way, the "buying a movie on DVD" is now "buying an NFT."

Fun fact, Twitter creator Jack Dorsey sold his first tweet as an NFT at USD 2.9M.

What does this mean for the arts?

I actually hate the idea of the struggling artist. Where the artist needs to be poor and must sacrifice the material things and surrender to their artwork.

Like any other type of work, I believe that art has to guarantee a standard of living similar to its peers. Because in the end, art is as essential as a building. We all consume it in one way or another.

I think the NFTs open a massive door for that idea to end.

It is an opportunity to sell and consume tailor-made art for each type of platform that exists today.

NFTs are forcing us to understand a TikTok can have artistic value just like a meme, a Tweet, or an oil painting.

And if it has artistic value, it also has economic value.

Who knows if, in the future, artists will be able to make a living out of what they're passionate about and not on a corporate salary that pays for their dreams.
